Pam lewis - High Desert Outback

Paintings in this show are inspired by my journeys to the Tule Lake, Malheur, Hart Mountain,

and Sheldon National Wildlife Refuges located in the high plains desert and volcanic region that begins

at Crater Lake in Oregon and extends south through the vast Great Basin Sagebrush Desert into

northeast California and northwest Nevada.

The high desert is landscape of marsh and mountain, of reflection and rim rock, of seamless vistas and

sage-scented dreams, where elevations range from 4,000 to over 5,500 feet. Most roads are flat, straight

and open, with gradual climbs and long curves traversing through farmland, cattle ranches, marshes,

forested mountains, sagebrush and grasslands.

"Outback" refers to land with a natural ruggedness. In this land of contrasts, one  can enjoy a feeling of solitude

surrounded with landscape relatively untouched by modern civilization; view abundant wildlife such as antelope,

coyotes, deer and a myriad of bird species and travel the roads of early Pioneers of the West.
